I witnessed my very first sunrise over this past Thanksgiving Holiday. My husband, daughter and I went to visit family in Colorado, and we made it an event, to go and watch the sunrise, at the local mountain reservoir. We parked at a turnout off the road and sat at the bluff that overlooks the Fort Collins area, The view spans miles of homes and neighborhoods and recesses into a horizon perfect for watching the sun make its debut for the day. It was cold and spectacular. God reminds me who He is when I’m in the presence of his creation and magnificence. The rays of his grandeur bring light to many aspects of my life. I was fortunate to be in the moment enough to realize it was in fact a moment to take in and remember. The experiences I share with my family, and especially my daughter often incite me to automatically think about my own mom and how I wish I could have shared that same moment with her. My mother’s many facets reflect God’s light and illuminates my life. She is a gem, born in a state known for natural diamonds. Unlike, the diamonds you can freely go and dig for in Crater Lake, she’s a much rarer jewel, and God was right, “nothing you desire can compare with her”, she is my Sunrise Ruby.

The more spectacular the gem, the more valuable it is considered. That’s pretty much standard on all beautiful things. Whether naturally occurring, or created, the rarer the art form and the more inaccessible, and the more it eludes the average folk, mindset, or general understanding, then it becomes interesting enough to be considered different and possibly new. While gemstones aren’t new, the art-form of digital literature is [relatively] new. I’d say it’s a natural occurring outgrowth of man’s progression in technology and pushing out against the confines of the literary status quo. Digital literature aims to shine a light toward the inadequacies of traditional literature consumption and comprehension and recast, it. Digital literature not only allows the information being offered to be a reflection of traditional literature in a new form, but also takes it and refracts it, into something new.

In a weird way, Dementia is very similar. Though not a light source, it is a source of energy that has found its way into my mom’s being and is interfering with her ability to detect, interpret and reflect information normally. This dark energy is acting more like diffraction, limiting her natural light as well as her cognitive abilities.

The extent to which my mom is aware of her ability or inability to intuit, understand, process, and remember information is uncertain. Ironically, the Dementia has carved a new facet in the life of my mom and illuminated the reality of to me and my siblings that for every sunrise there is a sunset and before her last of either, we work together to ensure that she is well taken care of, treasured, and protected for the rare gem that she is.
